Stony Brook has a long tradition of providing life saving donations to the Long Island and New York City areas. Last year our school collected 2200 pints of blood; each pint has the potential of saving several peoples lives! We are the greatest provider of donations among Colleges and Universities and the sixth greatest in the New York Metropolitan Area.
Long Island is currently experiencing an EMERGENCY blood shortage! The recent blackout, along with a trend of lower donation during the summer months has severely impacted Long Island Blood Services Blood Supply. During the blackout alone, nearly 2500 donations and hundreds of platelet donations were lost. New FDA restrictions have banned importation of blood from Europe, and the SARS and West Nile epidemics have all contributed to the shortage of Blood Supplies for the Long Island Blood Services. Long Island Blood Services is in desperate need of new donors of blood to fill the gap! Blood has only a forty-two day shelf life. Until this shortage is rectified, we will be holding emergency blood drives on a regular basis. Please check this page or call 632-6100 for updates. |
