Special Events - 2010 Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 8:00 pm and Sunday, January 24 at 7:00 pm, RH, $ Aulos Ensemble – All the Brandenburgs All six of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos will be played by the Aulos Ensemble and their special guests in two concerts. Enjoy these lively Baroque masterpieces known for their influence on musicians throughout the centuries. Your ticket purchase to hear all the Brandenburgs includes a reserved seat for both evenings. The Aulos Ensemble includes Christopher Krueger, flute; Marc Schachman, oboe; Linda Quan, violin; Myron Lutzke, cello; and Arthur Haas, harpsichord. Tickets $42 Sunday January 24, 2010 at 3:00 pm, RH, $ An Afternoon With the Bach Family C.P.E. Bach, son of Johann Sebastian Bach, described life in his father’s home as a “musical beehive.” It must have been, because J.S. Bach had 21 children. Many went on to successful professional musical careers, with Carl Philip Emmanuel and Johann Christian enjoying greater fame during their lifetimes than their father. The family music making, along with impromptu get-togethers with friends, must have been extraordinary indeed. Members of the Aulos Ensemble will have some fun pretending to be members of the Bach family, treating us to Bach favorites, in this one-hour program specifically for young school-age musicians. Ensembles include string quartets, piano trios, percussion, woodwinds, brass, voice and jazz ensemble. (Snow date February 3). Thursday, February 4, 2010, 8:00pm, RH, $ Emerson String Quartet The Emerson Quartet will perform an eclectic mix of chamber music: Ives Quartet No. 1 "From the Salvation Army" (1898); Shostakovich Quartet No. 9 (1964); and the Beethoven Quartet in E flat, Op. 127. Thursday, February 18, 2010, 8:00 PM, RH Christina Dahl, Piano Faculty member Christina Dahl presents a recital of works for solo piano, including a series based on the “19th century view of Bach. Program includes piano transcriptions and arrangements of Bach’s Organ Fugue (Lizst), Preludes and Fugues (Mendelssohn) and the Choral Preludes. Sunday, February 21, 2010, 12:00pm, Music Building Early Music Day All are invited to see, hear, and touch early instruments, including the harpsichord, Baroque violin, cello, guitar, theorbo, cornetto, recorder, fortepiano, and voice. Each classroom in the Music Wing of the Staller Center will feature a different instrument, and Arthur Haas and members of his harpsichord studio will be giving an informal harpsichord performance. Come and get the insider's view of early music, and then hear a superb Baroque concert in the Staller Center Recital Hall at 3PM. Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 8:00pm, RH, $ Music on a Winter’s Eve – A Stony Brook Faculty Recital It may still be winter, but spring can’t be far behind. Enjoy an array of chamber music masterpieces that may conjure up images of lions and lambs, performed by the distinguished, award-winning artists at Stony Brook University. These sought-after performers have hundreds of recordings among them, encompassing the most famous classical repertory, 20th century masterworks and new compositions. With Soovin Kim, violin; Katherine Murdock, viola; Colin Carr, cello; Kurt Muroki, double bass; Eduardo Leandro, percussion; and Christina Dahl, piano. Brahms' Sextet No. 2 will be featured on the program. Complete program to be announced. Tuesday, March 23, 2010, 12:00pm, 4:00pm and 8:00pm, RH Piano Project 2010 Faculty, students and guest artists explore the works of a single composer, genre or period in a single day of concerts and lectures. Monday, April 12, 2010 and Thursday, April 15 at 8:00 pm, RH, $ Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn - Complete Works for Cello And Piano Colin Carr and Thomas Sauer perform the complete works for cello and piano of Brahms, Schumann and Mendelssohn at concert halls across the world as their major recital project for 09-10. “We offer these recitals as an exploration of the musical connections between Mendelssohn, Schumann and the much younger Brahms,” they note. “All three show their true colors in their music for cello and piano.” Monday, April 26, 2010, 8:00pm, RH ClariNuts! An unusual program of wild and serious fun presented by clarinet professor Alan Kay and the distinguished graduate clarinet students of Stony Brook University's Music Department. April 28 – May 1, 2010, RH Stony Brook Chamber Music Festival Faculty, students, guest artists, and members of the Emerson String Quartet perform chamber works of all genres, time periods, and configurations. Featuring public masterclasses, wall-to-wall performances, pre-performance lectures, and a reception at the conclusion of the festival.
