2008-2009 Concert Season Nina Stern studied at the famed Schola Cantorum in Basel and taught in Milan at the Civica Scuola di Milano. She is renowned for her recorder and early clarinet mastery as well as her explorations into traditional folk music of Eastern Europe. With the Israeli recorder player, Daphna Mor, she has just issued a CD entitled, East of the River. Percussionist David Buchbut was born to Moroccan parents and studied with some of the world’s finest North African percussion teachers. He performs on different percussion instruments from the Middle East such as the Egyptian Tabla, the Riq (Egyptian tambourine) which is used as the lead percussion in classical Arabic music and the Bandir - a frame drum used in Morocco. They will be joined by harpsichordist Arthur Haas, long known to Stony Brook audiences as the director of the Stony Brook Baroque Players. Please join us on October 14 at 3PM in the Recital Hall of the Staller Center. As always, Baroque Sundays at Three concerts are offered free of charge to the public with a requested donation to defray concert expenses of $8 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Sunday, October 5, 2008, 3:00pm, RH Baroque Sundays at Three Passionate music for large instrumental and vocal ensemble performed by distinguished alums and guests. Featured will be music of Buxtehude, Corelli, and more. Sunday, November 16, 2008, 3:00pm, RH Baroque Sundays at Three Arthur Haas and the elite Stony Brook Baroque Players present a delightful and eclectic program of vocal and instrumental masterpieces, both secular and sacred, spanning the 17th and 18th centuries. Friday, February 13, 2009, 8:00pm, RH Stony Brook Opera Giacomo Carissimi’s Jephthe and Francesco Provenzale’s Dialoghi per la Passione, sung in the original Latin and Italian languages, with projected titles in English. Performed on period instruments by the Stony Brook Baroque Ensemble. Conducted by David Lawton and Arthur Haas and directed by Jennifer Griesbach. Sunday, March 8, 2009, 3:00pm, RH Baroque Sundays at Three Featuring guest performers Lorna Peters and Jubal Fulks. This exciting West coast harpsichord and violin duo will present fiery music by Bach, LeClair and others.
